Overview

Friends, here are some home remedies for low blood pressure or hypotension. Blood is the major constituent of our body. The amount of blood in a human body depends on the size and weight of the individual.

On average a human body contains nearly 5 liters of blood.

Generally, women may have less blood compared to men. But women's blood volume increases by nearly 50% during pregnancy.

What is blood pressure?

Our heart continuously circulates blood by pumping blood in our body through nerves called arteries.

Arteries carry blood from the heart to other parts of the body. Blood pressure is the pressure exerted by blood against the walls of the arteries.

The blood pressure doesn't remain constant, it changes throughout the day.

When the heart beats, the blood pressure is called Systolic blood pressure and when the heart rests between two beats, it is called Diastolic blood pressure.

The normal blood pressure level is less than 120 systolic and less than 80 diastolic (written as 120/80 mmHg.). mm refers to millimeters and Hg is the chemical symbol for mercury.

A blood pressure level reading less than 90 systolic and less than 60 diastolic is generally considered low blood pressure (90/60mmHg).

Low blood pressure generally causes no problem until it is too low but abnormally low blood pressure is more dangerous than high blood pressure.

In this condition, a person may feel dizzy or even may faint. If not treated immediately, it may be life-threatening.

What are the symptoms of Low Blood Pressure or Hypotension?

The symptoms of low blood pressure may be

  • feeling of too much weakness
  • dizziness
  • blurred vision
  • fainting
  • feeling sick
  • nausea
  • cold, pale skin
  • lack of concentration
  • fatigue
  • depression
  • slow breathing

In case you feel any of the above signs, to be on the safe side, keep checking your blood pressure level from time to time and consult a doctor if needed.

When to see a doctor?

It is advisable to keep track of your blood pressure level from age of 18. Up to the age of 40, get it checked every 2 years or as advised by your doctor.

Be more careful at the age of above 40.

Some pharmacies or chemist shops check BP for minor fees or you may find some good BP-checking machines that keep track of your Blood Pressure at your home on regular basis.

Ignoring your blood pressure status or level for long may result in sudden and emergent attacks and you may have to be hospitalized immediately, in case your blood pressure drops suddenly and you are not aware.

What are the causes of low bp?

There may be various reasons behind low blood pressure
  • During pregnancy: blood pressure of women generally drops during the pregnancy period in the first five or six months.
  • Habit of keeping the stomach empty for long hours. Do not take your breakfast too late in the morning.
  • Doing workouts or gym on empty stomach. Always eat something half or one hour before going to the gym. Drink a lot of water before and after the gym.
  • Drop in blood volume: blood pressure may also go low because of a drop or loss in blood volume due to various reasons like some infection, bleeding, trauma, illness, or lack of proper diet etc.
  • Excess bed rest. Taking long and excessive bed rest may also upset and reduce your blood pressure.
  • Some medicines for the treatment of hypertension, Parkinson's disease, heart problems, and erectile dysfunction may also cause low blood pressure.
  • Some severe infections may also result in low BP.

What are home remedies for low blood pressure or hypotension?

Here we will discuss some home remedies for low BP

Remedy #1 Using almonds

  • Take seven almonds and wash them.
  • Soak the almonds at night for eight to ten hours.
  • Remove their skin in the morning.
  • Eat them by chewing them one by one with a glass of hot milk.
  • Alternately you can make a paste of peeled almonds and boil it in a glass of milk and drink.
Almonds are rich in vitamins, mono-saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants and minerals like catechin, flavonoids, protocatechuic acid, methyl quercetin, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, resveratrol, kaempferol and vanillic acid.

Due to the presence of so many useful ingredients, almonds recently have been advocated as a promising part of a healthy diet improving blood pressure.

Remedy #2 Using raisins (kishmish)

  • Take thirty two raisins and wash them properly. (Thirty two is not any magic number. You can take less or more according to your age and requirement.                                                         I am giving this clarification because when I posted this video on my page Indian Nuskhe in August 2016, a few people asked funny questions like why 32, what if I take 33, is it a magic number etc.).
  • This is the difference between Facebook short videos and blogs. Here we can go to length to explain and clarify a topic.
  • Soak them in water at night for twelve hours.
  • In the morning, eat them by chewing one by one.
  • Repeat this for thirty-two days regularly (here too, thirty-two is not any magic number, you can change it as per your will and requirement, still it will work).
  • This process will flush toxins out of your body.
  • This will also increase your blood level. The low blood level is one of the main reasons for low blood pressure.
  • This will control your blood pressure and give other 23 benefits to your body.

from low BP

If you suffer from low blood pressure, you should moderately increase your intake of salt in your daily meals.

This will supply the intake of sodium, thereby increasing your bp. Moreover, sodium boosts the capacity of the body to hold water, which increases blood levels.

This also solves the problem of the feeling of urination again and again.

According to World Health Organization, your daily diet must contain one spoonful of added salt.

Specifically, if you go to the gym or work out in summer, salt flows out of the body in sweat. So have some salty lemon water during or after a workout.

4. Eat more meals a day

Instead of taking three heavy meals a day, distribute your meals into five light meals. Eat at intervals of two to three hours.

Taking heavy meals may result in a sudden lowering of blood pressure after a meal.

So enjoy healthy snacks in between your main meals. This is also a very good habit for diabetic people.

5. Wear compression stockings

Compression stockings help in circulating blood caught in the lower legs and feet.

6. Avoid lifting heavy weights suddenly and without warm-up, it may boost your blood pressure suddenly.

7. Avoid taking bath with too hot water for too long.

If you take bath in a tub, you may stay in the tub for some time, and keep the temperature of the water to normal.

8. Do not hop up out of bed.

When you get up in the morning, avoid hopping out of your bed suddenly. First, sit then stand up and start very slowly.

This allows proper flow of blood in your brain and heart which were in rest position for hours.
