Ovarian Cyst
The ovarian cysts are generally not harmful and create little
or no discomfort in women.

Overview

Women have two ovaries, one on each side of the uterus. Each is about the size and shape of an almond.

Ovarian Cysts are sacs filled with fluid that are present in or on the ovaries. Most ovarian cysts occur naturally as a result of a normal menstrual cycle.

You may have one mostly during periods and you may not know. They are called functional cysts.

Ovaries release eggs in monthly cycles during the childbearing years. It is common thing for many women to have ovarian cysts at some time.

The ovarian cysts are generally not harmful and create little or no discomfort to women. They disappear on their own within a few months, without any treatment.

But beware, if a woman has an ovarian cyst at the time of pregnancy, the size of the ovarian cyst increases with the growth of the child, and sometimes it has to be removed by surgery before the birth of the child because it affects or suppresses the growth of the child.

But this all depends on the size of the cyst.

So, however busy you are, you should get regular pelvic exams to protect yourself from any potentially serious problem.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cyst

Until the size of the ovarian cysts is large, they don't cause any symptoms and they go away on their own. However, if the size is large, you may have the following symptoms:
  • Heaviness in the abdomen
  • A dull or sharp pain in the lower abdomen on the side of the cyst
  • Bloating or vomiting
  • Rapid Breathing
  • Weakness

If you feel any of the above symptoms, consult a doctor.

Causes of ovarian cysts:

The main causes of ovarian cysts are
  • Endometriosis-a condition when the tissues, instead of growing in the uterus, grow outside the uterus. We shall write an article on Endometriosis separately.
